Latest research from an independent consultancy shows that in spite of newspaper reports about the burgeoning buy to let business, many professional landlords are feeling the pinch. Research by BDRC Continental, who is the largest independent market research consultancy in the UK, shows a substantial rise in the number of portfolio landlords making a loss. There are concerns that rising rents could increase arrears this year as the percentage of tenants in severe rent arrears reached 18% last year which is the highest level since the third quarter of 2008. During the last quarter of 2011 the number of tenants suffering from severe financial difficulty increased, with over 11,300 tenants owing more than two months’ rent compared to a year earlier.
