Men now Demanding a Better Class of 'Garden Shed’
The garden shed has always traditionally been a male preserve, somewhere to escape to and which was out of bounds to the females in the family. It was where the man of the house could indulge in a crafty smoke, or could just sit there and daydream. Roald Dahl wrote many of his stories in a 6' x 7' shed at the bottom of his garden, and George Bernard Shaw wrote most of his plays in his. But apparently this is all changing, and they are no longer tumbledown cobweb infested constructions, but are far more likely to be luxurious and large, and many are in the house.
Apparently the fashion amongst the wealthy is to create extra space for wine tasting rooms, bowling alleys or even private screening rooms, while others have the requisite pool table and bar. Even the humble garden shed is getting a makeover, and families are choosing to spend thousands on building an extra room in the garden, complete with heating and lighting, and perhaps this makes perfect sense as it still cheaper than moving. The idea of an extra room in which men can relax is nothing new, as many US homes are built with rumpus rooms or dens complete with La-Z-Boy loungers and widescreen TVs, and at least it makes it easy for the women of the house to shut the door on all the clutter. Wonder what the female equivalent of a garden shed is.
