More Than Half of Private Landlords Care Whether Tenants Are Male or Female

New research by an online lettings agency has shown more than half of landlords within the private rental sector care whether or not they let to a man or woman, with gender typecasting being very much alive and well. Men are still perceived as being good at DIY and general maintenance, while women are seen as being tidy and clean. Not surprisingly the survey found landlords were more likely to be in favour of letting to couples, thereby getting the best of both worlds.

According to some landlords, men are better tenants than women as they're more likely to know how to operate the central heating, and can carry out small repairs. They are also viewed as being more easy-going than women. However women are likely to keep the property tidy and are more likely to keep the garden looking good. Some landlords have also commented they are more likely to get their rental payments on time from women as they are more in control of their finances. Females often stay put for longer, helping to avoid those void periods in between tenancies. In general couples are viewed as being the best long-term bet, particularly if they have children, and landlords are more likely to rent to a couple rather than friends who share.
